Jorun Bombay – No Phone ft. Phill Most Chill

No Phone [feat. Phill Most Chill] b/w Harlem River Vibe by Jorun Bombay | J.B.O.R. — JBOR-04 | Any discerning beat head & 45 fan will be more than familiar with the work of @jorunbombay who is a master of his craft & as true-skool as hip-hop gets. The edit king from the North has turned out a seemingly unending stream of essential donuts & most of it has come on his self-release label. His scalpel work is authentic & original — & that is exactly what he delivers on his latest drop.

The foundation of side A’s “No Phone” is a throwback to the golden era of hip-hop & features that instantly recognizable phone ring, “Hello?” & that question,
“Hey woman where were you last night?” That sample from 1982’s “El San Juanera” by World’s Famous Supreme Team, answered by Esther Williams’ “Last Night Changed It All (I Really Had a Ball)”, is rooted in the classic drumbreak from Eddie Bo’s “We’re Doing It (The Thang)”. Sir Bombay reworks it all into something fresh showcasing @phillmostchill, aka Phill Stroman, who has been in the hip-hop game since the 70s.

On the flip, “Harlem River Vibe” sees JB reworking the garage-house, R&B jam “Vibe” by Zhané (from their 1996 debut album “Pronounced Jah-Ney”). For this rework, JB replaces the Naughty By Nature production with Larry Mizell’s jazz-funk gem “Harlem River Drive” by flutist Bobbi Humphrey (from 1973’s “Blacks & Blues”). The result is a sweet neo-soul-jazz heater.
